Memoirs is a quiet, contemplative exhibition by Toronto-based artist Doris Purchase, unfolding as a reflective continuation of her earlier exhibition Dim the Lights at Propeller Art Gallery. Situated just across the park from the Theatre Centre, this exhibition reads like an intimate encore, one rooted in memory, chance, and the unseen mechanics behind creative life.
The work draws inspiration from a formative behind-the-scenes experience at a theatre in Oakville, where the artist first became fascinated with what happens beyond the visible stage. That early encounter planted a lasting curiosity about parallels between performance and process, between the studio and the stage, and between what is revealed and what remains hidden.
In Memoirs, miniature “theatres” appear as vessels for memory and meaning. Each piece glows softly, evoking the presence of a ghost light left on an empty stage. These illuminated forms suggest both protection and invitation, warding off what haunts while allowing memories to move freely in the dark. The exhibition traces a full-circle moment in the artist’s practice, where art, memory, and quiet discovery converge.
