Event Details

Searching for Aimai is a poetic solo play by playwright and performer Coleen Shirin MacPherson, presented by Cahoots Theatre. Through physical theatre and visual storytelling, the production explores the fragile space between identity, ancestry, and belonging.

As a woman on the verge of giving birth realizes she cannot hear the songs of her ancestors, she is pulled into a surreal inner journey. Locked alone in a bathroom, she confronts her self-doubt and searches for a sacred fire that feels lost. Her path leads her toward her great-grandmother and into the tangled, partially erased threads of her mixed-race lineage.

Inspired by the tension between what we see and what we know, Searching for Aimai wrestles with questions of inheritance, cultural memory, and visibility. The play asks what it means to belong when history is fragmented and invites audiences to reconsider how identity is carried, remembered, and reimagined.

Running 75 minutes with no intermission, this deeply personal work is both intimate and expansive, offering a call to see one another with renewed clarity and care.
