July Featured Artist: Luke Painter
Luke Painter's meticulously detailed large scale drawings capture a mood of mystery and unsettling darkness. From wooden homes nestled amongst ravaged forests, to shadowy vistas and even shadowier manor houses, Painter's touch is both expressive and careful.
The more time one spends with his work though, the more Luke's sense of whimsy surfaces. In his Animations, Painter proposes elaborate nature-machines, each one playing with a different aspect of Municipal development and its effects on the natural environment.
Luke has exhibited solo in galleries from Montreal to New Mexico, and his exhibitions with other artists have taken him from New York and Los Angeles in the USA, to Paris and Marseilles in France. He is currently represented in Marseilles by Bonneau-Samames Art Contemporain, and in Toronto by West Queen West's own Angell Gallery.

"The fact the conveniently named artist Luke Painter no longer makes paintings but instead produces only elaborate, exacting drawings hints at the delicious perversity that powers his art."

In Revival-esque, Painter invokes a sense of restless resurrection through sculpture and mysterious image composites. The viewer is made to wonder if these architectural, commercial and human apparitions existed in our distant past or a parallel dimension that is unfamiliar to us. Luke Painter continues to employ his immense technical skill to create highly enigmatic and quasi-historical works that delight the imagination.
Revival-esque is Luke Painter's sixth solo exhibition at Angell Gallery. Recent exhibitions of his work include: Pulse New York Art Fair (2009), Portland Documentary and Experimental Film Festival (2009), Athina Art Fair (2009), and an upcoming solo exhibition at Bonneau-Samames Art Contemporain in Marseille, France. Luke is Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at Ontario College of Art and Design.
