Elyse
George Gallery announced its grand opening on June 5th, 2010.
Their current show features the work of Canadian artist Scotty Schafer
from
June 5th to June 30th.
The gallery is the love-child of
advertising-biz couple Jason Cowell
and Justine Purcell. Cowell, after spending the last two decades in New
York,
Amsterdam, San Francisco and Los Angeles is now happy to call Toronto
home and
loves the idea of building something vibrant and fun in this cultured,
high-energy
city. After fifteen years in the Advertising industry and continuing as a
Creative Director, Cowell is getting reacquainted with his roots through
the
gallery and intends to also use the space as a studio to create his own
work embracing the
comprehension of “uninhibited ideas”.
The In addition to
being an interdisciplinary gallery for local and
international artists, Elyse George will also host guerilla supper club
events,
fashion shows, wine tastings and many more eclectic and inspiring
events.
Both Cowell and Purcell are
well-versed in the digital and social
media realm and their business model reflects this expertise. “We’re
definitely
going to use social media to promote artists and individual pieces. It’s
such a
natural way for us to reach out to people, and for the gallery to reach a
wider
community.”
In the coming months, the
Elyse George Gallery will showcase a
number of emerging and established painters, photographers, and
sculptors. “We
created Elyse George because we love art, and love Toronto, and we
wanted to
make a place that inspires you from the moment you walk in the door.
We’re
doing it for the adventure and the experience of it, for us, and for
everyone
that gets involved,” says Purcell.
